Another philanthropy created by a member of the Rockefeller family that provided funding for musical activities was the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music. Martha Baird Rockefeller (MBR) was the second wife and widow of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. In her youth she studied the piano at the New England Conservatory and took lessons with Arthur Schnabel. Prior to her first marriage she was a successful classical pianist and gave concerts across the U.S. and throughout Europe. She was encouraged by her second husband to explore areas of her interest to target for philanthropic giving and the two of them discussed her desire to provide aid to musicians and musical productions.
